About Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is the specialty of dentistry which includes the diagnosis and surgical and adjunctive treatment of diseases, injuries, and defects involving both the functional and esthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the oral and facial regions.
As part of their specialty training, oral and maxillofacial surgeons study such diverse areas as anesthesia, head and neck surgery, pathology, trauma, and radiology.
Initial Consultation
Your initial appointment will consist of a registration form and consultation explaining your diagnosis and treatment options. Once a treatment plan is finalized, you will be appointed for treatment on another day. Occasionally, a patient will request surgery to be done on the same day as the consultation. We have found that this is generally not in your best Interest. Every patient is different, with unique needs, and different health requirements. Even what seems to be a simple tooth extraction can be a very complex situation. The better informed you are, the better prepared you will be. Our desire is to make your surgery as easy and comfortable for you as possible.
Please assist us by providing the following information at the time of your consultation:
IMPORTANT: All patients under the age of 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at the consultation visit.
A pre-operative consultation and physical examination is mandatory for patients undergoing IV anesthesia for surgery. Please have nothing to eat or drink 8 hours prior to your surgery. You will also need an adult to drive you home.
Please alert the office if you have a medical condition that may be of concern prior to surgery (i.e. diabetes, high blood pressure, artificial heart valves and joints, rheumatic fever, etc.) or if you are on any medication (i.e. heart medications, aspirin, anticoagulant therapy, etc.)
X-Ray
If your dentist or physician has taken x-rays, you may request that they forward them to our office. If there is not enough time, please pick them up and bring them to our office. If additional films are necessary, they can be taken at our facility.
